freecustomhome.com
A speculative proposition from the thesis.
freecustomhome.com is a proposition: that a generative design system could make the custom design of houses so inexpensive and expedient that it could be offered as a public service. The proposition includes an interface for the interaction of homeowners both before and after the construction of the home, providing rankings — similar to Yelp — that surface the most successful steel connection detail or wall assembly system, for instance.
The accompanying mockups imagined the service the way a consumer credit product is sold: "Mistakes on your house design can cost you thousands — see if yours is accurate." A permit-ready design free in two days, or an instant design and "score" for a dollar, rated by the (tongue-in-cheek) BERGIN score — "the metric required by most municipalities for construction of a single-family or duplex home in North America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia. BERGIN 2.0 for South America, coming soon."
